THINGS THAT GO "BOOM"!

Did you know that vets have concluded that dogs have 10 times the hearing capabilities of people? No wonder they are highly sensitive and reactive to things that go “boom” and not so “usual” loud noises. Responses to loud noises like thunderstorms, fireworks, car “backfires”, ambulance sirens, construction noise can run from terror “shakes”, to running away. Hiding, whining, anxious, chewing everything in site, wrecking the house, pacing, howling, excessive panting, barking…out of control and sometimes destructive behavior is common in anxious pets.

There are positive natural things you CAN do to desensitize a dog BEFORE a storm happens, or firework noise happens.

Give you dog some milk! Milk has a component chemical of tryptophan that brings calm, lessons anxiety.
According to Dr. Andrew Jones DVM…¼ c cup per 20 lbs of body weight.

When a loud noise is happening…say a thunderstorm….do NOT reinforce the fear behavior by being over nice and “comforting”. Take a squeaky toy or a ball, something that you can get your dog’s attention away from the noise or the “change”. Replace the fear with a positive experience or object so they associate the noise with a good thing!

I love the use of flower essences for emotional balancing. A couple that can help with “change” or noise surprises are Mimulus, and Rescue Remedy (Five Flower). Best to administer at least a week before fireworks and use for an especially sensitive dog on a regular basis. For emergencies during a noise incident, just put a drop or two on the nose to lessen anxiety. AND, be sure to get a custom flower essence read to see what is causing the emotional upset. Always dilute your flower essences for animals…jot me a note and I will send you the easy method of dilution.

Apply pressure: “Thundershirts” (http://www.thundershirt.com/)…pressure is a great way to calm and animal. You can make your own “shirt” by wrapping tightly a T-shirt around the chest and over the back. HUGS! Hugging or squeezing calms both people and animals and is a natural response to “danger”. Ever pinch yourself HARD as you experience anxiety during an emergency? It calms and helps you focus!

Tellington Touch: This is a therapeutic practice of touching pressure points with small uplifting circles using your forefinger and thumb that helps release anxiety and tension in an animal. Try this out first when animal is calm. If it relaxes them, then this will help during anxious times. Do this around the ears…start at the base of the ear, go around the edge of the ear and then back down to the base, concentrating on the base. Snuggle homes and crates. Do you have an established place of rest that is “cave like” for your dog? This helps them find a safe zone for times of stress. Always leave the “door” open…and watch for difficulty getting in or out of a crate for some animals.

When things go “boom” be ready with some easy natural positive ways to lessen the reaction to surprise. Echo the “booms” with new loving flow for both you and your dog!
